Registration

How do I know when it's my time to register?

As a general guide, incoming students generally register during the summer for fall semester and January for spring semester. Current (Continuing) students register in April for fall semester and in November for spring semester. You will be assigned a specific day and time for registration. Times are based on number of hours completed and in progress, so graduating seniors register first, then juniors, and so on. To see your specific time assignment:

1. Log in to CUConnect.colorado.edu

2. Click on “Courses” and then “Register for Courses"

3. Scroll down to the bottom and click on “Registration Status.”

4. Select the appropriate term and campus.

5.This screen will show you the day and time you have been assigned and alert you to any registration stops that have been placed on your record which you need to have cleared before you can register.

PLEASE NOTE: Your registration time assignment does not show on this screen once your time assignment has passed. Your assignment will only display if it has not arrived yet and you are therefore ineligible to register. We encourage you to register as close to your assigned time as possible for the best course selection.

We recommend that you get in the habit of looking at the academic calendars and your registration time every semester and getting these on your calendar early so that you remember to register as soon as you can! There is also a deadline when you have to be finished registering, so make sure you make note of that.

How Do I Register? (A click-by-click guide)

1. Go to http://CUConnect.colorado.edu . Log in with your IdentiKey and password. If you don’t know your IdentiKey or haven’t activated your IdentiKey, select “IdentiKey/Login Help” just below the “Login” button.

2. Select the “Courses” tab.

3. Select “Register for Classes” and follow the instructions listed.

4. Read the page titled “Registration Menu.”

5. The buttons you need are located at the bottom of the screen. They are blue rectangles.

6. The first step is to click on “Student Opp.” Follow the directions.

7. Next, click on the button titled “Register.”

8. You will see a page titled “Registration.” Highlight the buttons titled “Boulder Main Campus and select the current term. Press “Submit.”

9. If you are a Colorado resident, you will be prompted to follow the directions for the College Opportunity Fund. Follow the prompts, then click “Continue to Registration.”

10. Click on the “Course Search” button at the bottom of your screen.

11. You will see a series of drop-down menus:

a. The first one will read “Boulder Main Campus Courses.”

b. The second menu will read “Select Course Subject,” where you will scroll down to find the four-letter prefix of the course you are choosing, or you may type it into the small empty box beneath the drop-down menu. For instance, if you are planning to register for an introductory business course, you will type in BCOR or scroll down until you come to that section.

c. If you want to find a course to fulfill one of your general education requirements from the arts and sciences core curriculum, scroll down the core course area menu until you come to one of the sections required by business that you have not yet fulfilled.

d. You will need to choose the level of course you want to take. You can choose from “All undergraduate courses,” “lower division” (1000- and 2000-level courses), or “upper division” (3000- and 4000-level courses). Ifyou know it, you can also type in a specific course number.

e. The final menu allows you to set the times and days you want and whether you want to see open courses or all sections. Note: First year students are not allowed to join a waitlist until the drop/add period at the beginning of the semester, so restricting your search to open sections is a good idea.

f. Click “Search” at the bottom of the page.

g. You will be shown the courses available or a message that you need to choose different parameters to find open sections. If a course is open, you may add it simply by clicking on the “Add” button. When registering for a course with a recitation, you will select the recitation or the lab section and the associated lecture will automatically be included in your schedule. If you are successful, your schedule will show that you have added the course.

h. If you find courses from the printed version (PDF) of the course listings, or from a plan you created with Online Schedule Planner, you can also enter individual call numbers in the field titled “Course Requests” to register for the course.

The registration process can seem a little overwhelming at first, but the more you manipulate your schedule, the more comfortable you will become with it. If you’ve read all of your materials and have tried to register but are stumped, call us.

COURSE PREREQUISITES. Keep in mind that CUConnect does not stop you from registering for a course even if you do not have the necessary prerequisites—be sure to pay attention to avoid signing up for a course where you do not meet the requirements to take it! If you enroll in a class for which you do not have the prerequisite, the department or instructor may drop you at any time during the semester.

For more detailed information on how to register, visit the Registrar's website at http://registrar.colorado.edu/students/students.html and click on "How to Register."

What is schedule planner and how is it different from CUConnect?

Schedule Planner is a free registration assistance tool available for students. You can't actually register through Schedule Planner--you have to use CUConnect for that--but you can search for courses, plan your schedule, and see other useful information like course descriptions, FAQs for professors, booklists, and class sizes. Schedule planner is not "real time"; during registration it's updated frequently, usually once a day, but it won't show you up-to-the minute information. CUConnect is real-time, so if you want to see if a class is full this will give you the most up-to-date information on class availability. You can get to schedule planner at http://plus.colorado.edu/plus/planner/.

Add/Drop Deadlines

Each semester, deadlines will be posted on the Academic Calendar. Early in the semester there will be an add deadline, which is the last day you can add yourself to a course. There are multiple drop deadlines. The first is the deadline to drop yourself with no penalty. The second is the deadline to drop a course with an instructor signature, a W, and still have to pay tuition. You have to be passing the course to drop with instructor signature. After this, you have to petition the Dean's office and have extentuating circumstances to drop a class. In this instance, a committee will meet to determine if you are allowed to drop. See your academic advisor for a petition. Get in the habit of writing these deadlines on your calendar or in your planner in case you need to know them later. You can find the Academic Calendar on the Registrar's website at http://registrar.colorado.edu/calendar/calendars_schedules.html.

What is the difference between dropping and withdrawing?

The "drop" deadline is a deadline to drop an individual course. This assumes that after you drop, you will still be enrolled in some courses. To withdraw means to drop all of your courses and not attend CU for the term. Students generally withdraw because of major problems in their lives: financial, medical, etc...The drop deadline and the withdraw deadline are at different times, so make sure you look at the appropriate deadline.
