Internships
The Deming Center Summer Internship Program
The Center coordinates the placement of MBA interns in top Front Range entrepreneurial ventures. The program is designed for first year MBA students who have a genuine interest in new enterprises and emerging growth companies. Internships provide students with the opportunity to test and evaluate career goals while contributing to the bottom line of the business. Internships are a highlight of the students’ educational experience and a valued opportunity for their employers.
Internships are intended to provide meaningful learning experiences for entrepreneurially inclined MBA students, whose average age is 28 with five to seven years work experience before they return to obtain their MBA degree.
- Interns can assist with a wide range of projects and significantly contribute to the productivity of the company.
- Appropriate assignments for interns include but are not limited to strategic or marketing plan development; market research and analysis; project and product management; venture capital modeling and analysis; special projects; portfolio and investment management; new product development; market and financial modeling; systems administration; researching and evaluating new business opportunities.
- Internships are paid, taking into consideration the student’s qualifications and the host company’s resources. The target pay range is generally $18.00-$20.00 per hour.
- Internships usually begin after May 15 and last through mid-August. However, with the agreement of both parties, the student’s employment may continue into the academic year.
- Many intern host companies explore permanent employment of their student intern after completion of their MBA degree.
- Stipends - Early stage companies in either seed or A Round stage of financing may be eligible for a stipend to supplement ¼ to ½ of the agreed pay rate.
- The stipend amount is applicable for no more than 400 hours (normally over a 10 week period).
- One student per company is eligible for the stipend.
- Company is eligible for stipend funding for no more than two years running.
- Stipends will be awarded on a funds-available basis.
As a result of joint efforts with partners on and off campus, the Deming Network has relationships at the local, regional, and national levels to offer meaningful internship opportunities. Partners include the Boulder Innovation Center, Colorado StartUps, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Naturally Boulder Taskforce and CU Boulder’s Technology Transfer Office, as well as emerging entrepreneurial companies and venture capital and other financial firms. Companies that are part of the Deming Network are invited in the spring to participate.
