Chuck Marcy

Deming Center for Entrepreneurship

Chuck Marcy is a veteran of the natural and organic products business. Marcy was President and CEO of Horizon Organic Holding Corp from 1999-2004, its last five years as an independent company. Marcy led the company through a number of milestones, including a merger with Dean Foods in January 2004. In five years, the company grew from $85MM to over $225MM in sales and solidified its position as the nation’s leading organic dairy brand. Key to this success was significantly expanding distribution in Grocery, Natural and Club channels, as well as a national presence in Starbucks. Importantly, the brand achieved widespread consumer appeal through the creation of a strong branded consumer communication program featuring “Happy,” the Horizon Organic spokes cow.

Most recently, Marcy served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Healthy Food Holdings, a management holding company for branded “better for you” foods. The company’s portfolio included Van’s natural and organic frozen waffles and breakfast sandwiches. It also included Breyers and YoCrunch yogurt products. Earlier in his career Marcy served as President of The Golden Grain Division of The Quaker Oats Company. Under his leadership, the company acquired the Near East brand of all natural grain based side dishes and the Nile Spice brand of all natural dried soups. Prior to that Marcy held senior marketing, strategic planning and general management with General Foods, Sara Lee and Kraft. He is a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College and Harvard Business School.

Marcy has served on the Board of Directors of The Organic Trade Association since 2002. He has served as Treasurer since 2004. Marcy also served on the Board of Directors for Community Food Share, the food bank for Boulder County. He was Chairman for two years.
