The Business of Sports

The Business of Sports Certificate is a two-month, intensive certificate program offered by the Leeds School of Business. The program is a 6-credit “boot camp” for students and recent graduates who are seriously interested in pursuing careers in the sports and recreation industry.

Business of Sports 2014 will be held from June 9 to July 25, 2014. The program is Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm.

In the morning, students will learn what it is like to work in various divisions of the sports business world. Industry practitioners walk students through day-to-day operations of these departments and explain what it takes to get into these positions. The following divisions will be examined and integrated with industry-specific topics and industry guest speakers:

  • Economics of Sports
  • Leadership and Ethics
  • Sports Law
  • Sports Facility and Event Management
  • Sports Marketing and Sales

In the afternoon, students will conduct extensive research on a project developed by one of our contributing partners:

  • CU Athletics
  • Denver Broncos
  • Kroenke Sports Enterprises
  • Pac-12 Networks
  • USA Rugby
  • Vail Resorts Management
  • Verizon Wireless

Throughout the program, students will have numerous networking opportunities. They will meet professionals from different avenues of sports through career days and site visits.

Class Information

Students who have taken 60 credit hours or more may apply to the program. In addition, students must take the “Introduction to the Business of Sports” course (BADM 3880), offered in Maymester, to participate in the Business of Sports Certificate Program (BADM 4820). Maymester is May 12-30, 2014.

Class Size

The class size will be limited to a maximum of 45 students. This group size is large enough to promote diverse opinions and discussions but small enough to allow individual attention from instructors, industry guest speakers, and staff. Students must apply by March 14, 2014, to be considered for placement into the certificate program openings. All applicants are interviewed by the BOS Program Manager and enrollment is extremely competitive.

Class Structure

In the morning, students are taught by industry practitioners. These professionals explain how they began their careers, provide career advice, and explain the day-to-day operations of these facets of sports. Students will gain a direct understanding of the business of sports from industry leaders. The following topics are covered:

  • Economics of Sports
  • Leadership and Ethics
  • Sports Law
  • Sports Facility and Event Management
  • Sports Marketing and Sales

In the afternoon, students will conduct extensive research on a project developed by one of our contributing partners. Students work on assigned teams based on their interests. At the program’s conclusion, groups present their project findings to their partner organization. The organizations value the research conducted by the students, and frequently implement the student recommendations. The following companies provide the program with various research topics that pertain to their specific needs as an organization:

  • CU Athletics
  • Denver Broncos
  • Kroenke Sports Enterprises
  • Pac-12 Networks
  • Verizon Wireless
  • Vail Resorts Management
  • USA Rugby

Site Visits

Students will have designated days for site visits to local sports venues such as Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Coors Field, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, and the Pepsi Center. On these days, students will see the behind-the-scenes operations of major sports venues. After the tour, students will meet several employees who discuss how they got into sports and what they currently do on a daily basis. These site visits are great opportunities for students to meet industry professionals, find positions within these organizations, or seek guidance to obtain similar positions to the speakers.

Career Days

The students receive resume instruction and critiques. Following this, students will have the opportunity to network with many industry professionals throughout the program. Students interact with industry professionals teaching the modules, on site visits, and on career days. Career days are specifically geared toward meeting professionals from every area of sports to illustrate the countless ways for students to break into the sports industry. Students will learn how these industry employees got hired and what types of positions exist. This is also a great opportunity for students to make significant, professional connections within the industry.

Derek Thomas, manager of corporate partnerships and Andy Gorchov, general manager of Sports Authority Field, discuss their relationship with Business of Sports. Two former BOS students, Melissa Anderson and Tim Lawson, talk about how the program helped them land jobs with the Denver Broncos.

Best summer experience, end of story! The staff was outstanding, and many of my classmates are now great friends! If you're willing to work hard, it is an incredibly rewarding program. Not only did I leave with a certificate, but also an internship with the Broncos!
—Chris M., BOS 2013 Graduate

Most people have a fraternity, sorority, club, or activity that they said made their college experience and shaped the rest of their life. For me, that was the Business of Sports Certificate Program. It validated why I want to work in the world of sports. There has been nothing better than the BOS program in my college education. Networking with industry professionals is an amazing experience, and I keep in touch with my classmates.
—Brock A., BOS 2013 Graduate

As a parent, I was so pleased to see my son really find his career passion through the Business of Sports Program at the Leeds School of Business. He was thoroughly engaged and took advantage of all the networking opportunities available through the program. What a great hands-on program for students wanting to learn the business-side of sports.
