Doug Carmichael

Ph.D. Student

Biography

Biography

Doug was born in Michigan but grew up in Iowa City, IA. He stayed close to home for college, attending the University of Iowa and studying chemical engineering. His decision to study engineering was based on a lifelong interest in science and an affinity for designing things.

After obtaining his Bachelors degree, Doug worked at Abbott Labs near Chicago. There, he helped to make production of pharmaceutical products more robust and efficient (and therefore less costly). While at Abbott, Doug occasionally used process modeling software to determine which process improvements would be most beneficial. His positive experiences with process modeling led him to switch career paths and work directly in the software industry, where he had responsibilities for process modeling, optimization, and software development strategy at several different companies.

After over a decade in industry, Doug decided to switch career paths again and pursue a career in academic research. As a result, he enrolled at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado in the fall of 2010 to pursue a Ph.D. in Operations Management. Doug’s current research interests include robust optimization theory in industrial applications, and electrical grid analysis and optimization.

In his free time, Doug enjoys playing soccer, skiing, hiking, and participating in many other outdoor activities.
