Biography

Tony Tong is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship in the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder. His research interests revolve around companies’ corporate strategy choices and their implication for firm performance. Specific research topics studied include strategic alliances, mergers & acquisitions, foreign direct investment, and corporate innovation with a focus on innovation in emerging economies. He has published extensively in leading strategy journals including Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Strategic Organization, as well as the top journal in international business Journal of International Business Studies. He has received many awards for his research; for example, one article on employee mobility and M&As was selected as the Winner of the Strategic Management Society Best Conference Paper Prize (2011), and another article on Chinese firms’ patenting behavior and R&D structure was selected as the Winner of the IACMR/Emerald Chinese Management Research Fund Award (2011). He has also been invited to report his research findings at many top business schools and several nonprofit organizations worldwide. He currently serves on the editorial boards of two top journals in management, Academy of Management Journal and Strategic Management Journal.

Professor Tong’s teaching interests are in the areas of business and corporate strategy, global strategy, and technology and innovation strategy. He currently teaches strategy in the Leeds School’s Undergraduate, MBA (full time and professional), and Ph.D. programs. His teaching has received several honors including the Dean’s Commendation for Excellent Teaching from the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University and the Finalist of the MBA Teaching Excellence Award from the Leeds School of Business. He currently serves as the Director of the Ph.D. Program in Strategic, Organizational, and Entrepreneurial Studies at the Leeds School.
